Santa Maria

Last Thursday, was May 1st and it was a national holiday.  The D'Andolfo's in our branch, asked us if we would like to go on a walk through a lovely town south of Agroppoli, on the Cilento Coast, called Santa Maria.  Brother D'Andolfo is the First Councilor in our branch presidency. Paul loves working with him and admires him so much.

All three of the D'Andolfo kids came, as did their grandma Ilvira and another friend of their family who is from Naploli.  Guido, came too.  He lives just down the street from the D'Andolfo family.  He is the branch clerk. The men thought we should all  stop by Ivan's restaurant on the way back and eat and have a branch presidency meeting. Any excuse to eat!  So we had a full day, but very enjoyable.

Guido is a giant of a man in a withered crippled body.  We love him, as does every member of our branch.  Every time I am around him, I feel like I am in the presence of someone very very special. Most every Wednesday morning, Paul drives down to Guido's town, which is about 30-40 minutes away, and brings him to the church so he can work on the computer doing his ward clerk duties.  We then have him over for lunch, and I try to make him something special.  He lives by himself, and is alone so much of the time.  The D'Andolfos have adopted him and keep him company and check on him.  But I think that he enjoys getting out and coming up to Battipaglia each week.  This picture is of us three in that cute little town of Santa Maria.

The whole group of us.  The weather was perfect and we had such a nice walk through a beautiful old town.  We got these fried assorted fishlings that were put into a paper cone.  I don't know what it was called.  We wondered if we were suppose to eat the heads.  But our friends said said they don't and that was enough for me.

The long skinny parts sticking out the sides, are not French frys but rather little skinny fish worms with big heads.  Yuk!  Anziano Scherbel seemed to enjoy them though!

I rather enjoyed the gelato we bought.  It was really good.  Here is Jonathan, who is in our primary class, getting ready to enjoy his gelato!

And Zaira, his sister ate hers as fast as I did mine.

The small beach area was clean and there were several people swimming and laying out to catch a few rays.  We enjoyed strolling along and smelling the sweet fresh air and feeling the sun on our faces. We have had rain pretty much straight for a month.  So we extra appreciated this sunny day. This was a beautiful day to be out.

Sister D'Andolfo's mother,  Ilvira, is not a member, but she comes to church every Sunday with her daughter's family.  She is a wonderful lady.  She made me a doiley, and gave it to me as I visited with her several months ago.  She lives with the D'Andolfo family.  She is always pleasant and has a good smile.

We ate at Ivan's restaurant and had a yummy lunch with diverse salads, cheeses, and meats, and bread. And of course fantastic pasta!
